FAQs

A DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) body composition scan is widely considered the gold standard for measuring body composition. Unlike a scale or Body Mass Index (BMI), which simply tell you how much you weigh, a DEXA scan shows you what your weight is actually made of.
Using extremely low-dose X-ray technology, the scan separates your body into three fundamental compartments:
Fat Mass – how much of your body weight is fat
Bone Mass – the mineral content that gives your skeleton its strength
Lean Mass – everything else, including muscle, organs, body water, and other non-fat tissues
From these three compartments, DEXA provides a comprehensive picture of your health, including measurements such as body fat percentage, lean muscle mass, visceral adipose tissue (VAT), bone density, regional body composition, and Appendicular Lean Mass Index (ALMI).
At DexaFit Cincinnati, we believe the value of DEXA extends well beyond the measurements themselves. It provides an objective baseline that helps you better understand your body today, monitor meaningful changes over time, and make more informed decisions about nutrition, exercise, healthy aging, and long-term health.

Most people know what they weigh. Very few know what that weight is actually made of.
A DEXA body composition scan provides far more information than your weight or BMI. Rather than simply telling you how much you weigh, DEXA separates your weight into three fundamental compartments: fat mass, bone mass, and everything else—which is called lean mass. This simple distinction provides a much clearer understanding of your health and establishes a baseline you can use to measure meaningful progress over time.
Your scan includes detailed measurements of:
Body fat percentage and regional fat distribution
Lean muscle mass, including Appendicular Lean Mass Index (ALMI)—one of the best indicators of whether you’re maintaining enough muscle to support healthy aging
Visceral Adipose Tissue (VAT), the highly inflammatory fat surrounding your abdominal organs
Bone density to help assess skeletal health and screen for osteopenia and osteoporosis
Regional body composition and left-to-right muscle symmetry
Peer comparisons, allowing you to benchmark many of your measurements against age- and sex-matched individuals
Trend analysis through the DexaFit app, making it easy to monitor meaningful progress over time
Beyond the measurements themselves, our goal is to help you understand the “what,” the “so what,” and the “what’s next.” Every scan includes a personalized educational review with one of our trained team members. We explain complex body composition concepts in clear, patient-friendly language so you leave with a better understanding of your body—not simply a report filled with numbers.
For patients seeking a deeper level of personalization, our optional physician-guided interpretation includes a comprehensive medical consultation. This is where objective body composition data becomes personalized medical care. Your physician integrates your DEXA results with your medical history, laboratory data, medications, family history, lifestyle, and personal goals to provide individualized medical advice, clinical recommendations, and a tailored strategy for improving body composition, cardiometabolic health, healthy aging, and long-term healthspan.
Ultimately, a DEXA scan isn’t just about collecting data—it’s about helping you better understand your body so you can make more informed decisions about your health.

A DEXA body composition scan provides dozens of measurements, each offering valuable insight into your health. While every result contributes to the overall picture, I believe three measurements consistently provide the greatest insight into long-term health and healthy aging.
Bone Density
Healthy bones are the foundation of lifelong mobility and independence. DEXA is the gold standard for screening for osteopenia and osteoporosis, allowing us to identify declining bone health before a fracture occurs.
Visceral Adipose Tissue (VAT)
Not all body fat is created equal. Visceral Adipose Tissue (VAT) is the highly inflammatory fat that surrounds your abdominal organs and is associated with insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic health conditions. Understanding where you store fat is often more important than simply knowing how much fat you have.
Appendicular Lean Mass Index (ALMI)
Muscle is one of the strongest predictors of healthy aging. Appendicular Lean Mass Index (ALMI) measures the amount of lean muscle in your arms and legs relative to your height, providing one of the best objective assessments of whether you’re maintaining enough muscle to support strength, mobility, metabolic health, and long-term independence.
The Bigger Picture
While these are the three measurements I focus on most often, every DEXA scan provides a comprehensive assessment of your body composition—including body fat percentage, lean mass, regional body composition, left-to-right symmetry, and many other valuable measurements.
As a physician, I’m less interested in helping you simply weigh less than helping you carry less visceral fat, preserve stronger bones, and maintain the muscle you’ll depend on for the rest of your life. That’s why we call these the metrics that matter most.
Whether your goal is weight loss, athletic performance, healthy aging, or disease prevention, our goal is to help you understand the “what,” the “so what,” and the “what’s next”—so you can make more informed decisions and confidently track your progress over time.

There are many ways to estimate body composition, and each has its place. The best choice depends on your goals. If you’re looking for the most comprehensive and objective assessment of your body composition, DEXA is widely considered the gold standard.
Here’s how DEXA compares with other commonly used methods:
Body Mass Index (BMI)
BMI estimates whether your weight is appropriate for your height, but it cannot distinguish fat from muscle. Two people with the same BMI can have dramatically different body compositions and health risks.
Waist Circumference
Waist circumference provides a general estimate of abdominal fat and cardiometabolic risk but cannot measure visceral fat, muscle mass, or bone health.
Skinfold Calipers
Skinfold measurements estimate body fat by measuring fat beneath the skin. Results depend heavily on the examiner’s technique and do not measure visceral fat, bone mass, or regional body composition.
Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA)
Devices such as Hume, InBody, Tanita, and many smart scales estimate body composition by measuring electrical resistance through the body. They are convenient for tracking trends, but results can be influenced by hydration, recent meals, exercise, alcohol intake, and other day-to-day variables.
Hydrostatic Weighing & Bod Pod
These methods estimate body fat with reasonable accuracy but rely on mathematical assumptions and generally divide the body into only two compartments—fat mass and fat-free mass. They do not directly measure bone mineral content or provide the detailed regional analysis available with DEXA.
DEXA Body Composition
DEXA directly measures your body using a three-compartment model, separating your weight into fat mass, bone mass, and lean mass. It also provides measurements unavailable from most other methods, including:
Body fat percentage
Lean muscle mass
Regional body composition
Visceral Adipose Tissue (VAT)
Appendicular Lean Mass Index (ALMI)
Bone density
Left-to-right muscle symmetry
Longitudinal trend analysis
The Bottom Line
Every body composition tool has value. The question isn’t whether one method is “good” or “bad”—it’s whether it’s precise enough to answer the question you’re are trying to ask.
For day-to-day monitoring, home scales and BIA devices can be useful for tracking general trends. When precision matters—whether you’re optimizing body composition, preserving muscle during GLP-1 therapy, improving athletic performance, monitoring healthy aging, or establishing an objective baseline—DEXA remains the reference standard.
At DexaFit Cincinnati, we believe objective measurement leads to better decisions. Our goal isn’t simply to measure your body composition—it’s to help you understand it, monitor meaningful change over time, and use that information to make more informed decisions about your health.

Devices such as Hume, InBody, Tanita, and other bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) systems can be useful for tracking general trends. They are quick, inexpensive, and convenient, making them excellent tools for frequent monitoring at home or in the gym.
The tradeoff is that these devices estimate body composition rather than measuring it directly. Their accuracy can be affected by hydration, recent meals, exercise, alcohol intake, skin temperature, and even the time of day.
A DEXA body composition scan is different. Rather than estimating body composition, DEXA directly measures your body’s three primary compartments—fat mass, bone mass, and lean mass—using highly precise, low-dose X-ray technology. It also provides advanced measurements that most BIA devices cannot, including:
Visceral Adipose Tissue (VAT), the highly inflammatory fat surrounding your abdominal organs
Appendicular Lean Mass Index (ALMI), an important marker of muscle health and healthy aging
Regional body composition, allowing us to evaluate fat and muscle distribution throughout your body
Bone density, helping screen for osteopenia and osteoporosis
Highly reproducible measurements that make it easier to monitor meaningful changes over time
We often tell patients that BIA devices are excellent for convenience, while DEXA is the gold standard when precision matters. If you’re making important decisions about weight loss, GLP-1 therapy, muscle preservation, athletic performance, or healthy aging, objective measurements can provide greater confidence that you’re tracking real change—not simply day-to-day fluctuations.

A DEXA scan is only as valuable as what you do with the information it provides.
At DexaFit Cincinnati, our comprehensive body composition scan measures body fat percentage, lean muscle mass, visceral adipose tissue (VAT), Appendicular Lean Mass Index (ALMI), regional body composition, and other advanced metrics that help you better understand your health.
Many providers can generate similar measurements. What makes DexaFit different is how we organize, present, and explain that information. Rather than handing you pages of numbers—or expecting you to calculate meaningful metrics yourself—we package what truly matters about your body composition into a clear, patient-friendly experience.
Your results are securely stored in the DexaFit app, allowing you to track meaningful changes over time and see how your body responds to changes in nutrition, exercise, medications, and lifestyle. Drawing on one of the world’s largest body composition databases—with more than 250,000 DexaFit body scans—the platform also benchmarks many of your measurements against age- and sex-matched peers, providing valuable context for understanding your results.
Every DexaFit scan includes a personalized educational review with one of our trained team members. Our goal is to help you understand the “what,” the “so what,” and the “what’s next” of your results. We explain complex body composition concepts in clear, patient-friendly language so you leave with a better understanding of your body—not simply a report filled with numbers. This educational review is designed to help you better understand your results and answer your questions; it is not intended to provide individualized medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment recommendations.
Whether you’re establishing a baseline or tracking progress over the years, our goal is simple: measure objectively, educate clearly, and empower you to make better decisions for your health.

Insurance coverage depends on which type of DEXA scan you need and why it’s being performed. At DexaFit Cincinnati, the vast majority of DEXA scans we perform are comprehensive body composition scans. These advanced scans are designed for health optimization rather than disease diagnosis and are generally not covered by insurance. Instead, we’ve intentionally priced them to make this valuable technology as accessible and affordable as possible.
If your primary care physician or specialist orders a medically indicated DEXA scan, it is typically a diagnostic DEXA of the hip, spine, and, when appropriate, the forearm. These examinations are designed to evaluate bone density, assess fracture risk, and monitor conditions such as osteopenia and osteoporosis. When medical necessity and insurance criteria are met, these studies are often covered by insurance, including Medicare for eligible individuals.
We also offer self-pay diagnostic bone density DEXA scans for individuals who want to establish a baseline earlier than current insurance guidelines allow, monitor bone health more frequently than insurance covers, or simply prefer not to wait until they meet insurance eligibility requirements.
Although both examinations use the same DEXA technology, they answer different clinical questions. Our comprehensive body composition DEXA measures body fat percentage, lean muscle mass, visceral adipose tissue (VAT), Appendicular Lean Mass Index (ALMI), regional body composition, and other advanced metrics used to guide body composition, nutrition, exercise, healthy aging, and longevity. If your goal is a more complete understanding of your health—not just your bone density—our body composition DEXA provides information that extends well beyond a traditional diagnostic bone density examination.
Many patients also choose to use Health Savings Accounts (HSA) or Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) to pay for their scan. We recommend checking with your insurance carrier or benefits administrator regarding your specific coverage and eligibility.

The ideal interval depends on your goals, but for most people, a DEXA body composition scan every 6 months provides an excellent balance between tracking meaningful progress and staying one step ahead of the gradual changes that occur with aging. Regular testing helps keep you accountable and ensures your nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle strategies continue moving you toward your goals.
If you’re actively trying to lose fat, build muscle, or beginning a new nutrition, exercise, or medication program, testing every 3 to 6 months often provides the most actionable feedback. For individuals using GLP-1 medications during active weight loss, we typically recommend repeating a DEXA scan every 3 months. This allows us to monitor not only fat loss, but also the preservation of lean muscle mass—one of the most important factors in achieving healthier, more sustainable results.
At DexaFit Cincinnati, we believe what gets measured gets managed. Regular DEXA scans allow you to objectively monitor changes in body composition, visceral adipose tissue (VAT), muscle mass, and bone health over time, replacing guesswork with precision and helping you make better-informed decisions about your health.

Your appointment is designed to be quick, comfortable, and informative. From check-in to reviewing your results, most visits take 30 minutes, with the scan itself lasting only about 6–10 minutes.
To ensure the most accurate results, we recommend:
Avoid strenuous exercise on the day of your scan.
Avoid eating for at least 2 hours before your appointment (water is encouraged).
Wear comfortable workout clothing without any metal. Please avoid zippers, buttons, snaps, underwire bras, belts, jewelry, watches, and clothing with metal accents to help ensure the highest-quality scan. If needed, we can provide orthopedic shorts on the day of your appointment.
Remove items such as watches, belts, jewelry, eyeglasses, phones, keys, and anything else from your pockets before the scan.
If you’ve recently received barium, gastrointestinal contrast, nuclear medicine, or other radiographic contrast agents, please let us know, as these can temporarily affect your results.
During the scan, you’ll lie comfortably on an open DEXA table while a scanning arm slowly passes over your body. The examination is completely non-invasive, painless, and requires no injections or needles. Most patients are surprised by how simple and relaxing the experience is.
The amount of radiation is extremely low—comparable to just a few hours of natural background radiation and far less than many common medical imaging studies.
After your scan, one of our trained team members will personally review your results with you. Rather than simply handing you a report, we’ll help you understand the “what,” the “so what,” and the “what’s next” of your measurements, answering your questions and making sure you leave with a clear understanding of your results. Patients seeking a deeper level of personalization also have the option of a physician-guided consultation to translate those findings into individualized medical recommendations.
-
One of the most common questions we hear is, “How much radiation does a DEXA scan use?”
The answer is very little.
A DEXA body composition scan uses extremely low-dose X-ray technology, exposing you to approximately the same amount of radiation you would receive from just a few hours of natural background radiation. For perspective, that’s only about 5% of the radiation from a routine screening mammogram.
Because of its very low radiation exposure and excellent accuracy, DEXA has become the gold standard for measuring body composition and bone density in clinical medicine, research, and elite sports.
For most healthy adults, the benefits of obtaining accurate, objective measurements of body composition and bone health far outweigh this minimal radiation exposure.
-
Yes. A DEXA scan is considered a safe, quick, and non-invasive examination for most individuals. There are no needles, injections, medications, or enclosed spaces, and the scan itself typically takes only a few minutes.
Because DEXA uses a very small amount of ionizing radiation, we do not perform DEXA scans during pregnancy or if pregnancy is suspected. If there is any possibility you may be pregnant, please let our team know before your appointment.
Most orthopedic implants—including hip or knee replacements, spinal hardware, dental implants, joint replacements, and pacemakers—do not prevent you from having a DEXA scan. While certain implants may affect measurements in the immediate area, they rarely interfere with the overall body composition analysis.
If you’ve recently undergone a barium study, CT scan with oral contrast, nuclear medicine test, or another imaging study using contrast, we may recommend waiting 48 hours before your DEXA scan to ensure the most accurate results.
If you have questions about a medical condition, implanted device, or recent imaging study, we’re always happy to discuss your individual situation before your appointment.

At DexaFit Cincinnati, we believe nearly everyone can benefit from understanding their body composition. A DEXA scan provides objective measurements that help replace guesswork with precision—whether your goal is improving health, enhancing performance, or aging well.
Body Composition & Weight Management:
The goal isn’t simply to lose weight—it’s to improve body composition by losing fat while preserving or building muscle. DEXA precisely measures body fat percentage, lean mass, and visceral fat, allowing you to monitor meaningful progress over time rather than relying on the scale alone.
Healthy Aging & Longevity:
Healthy aging begins with objective measurement. DEXA screens for osteopenia and osteoporosis while measuring muscle mass and visceral adipose tissue (VAT)—two of the most important markers associated with strength, metabolic health, and long-term independence. We also track Appendicular Lean Mass Index (ALMI), one of the best measures of whether you’re maintaining the muscle needed to age well.
Exercise, Performance & Rehabilitation:
Whether you’re beginning an exercise program, training for competition, or recovering from injury, DEXA provides precise measurements of muscle distribution and body composition that can help guide training, nutrition, and recovery strategies. It has long been used in sports medicine and by professional athletes to objectively monitor performance and rehabilitation.
Cardiometabolic Health:
Body weight alone tells us very little about future health. DEXA reveals where fat is stored—especially visceral fat, the highly inflammatory fat surrounding the abdominal organs that is associated with insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease, and cardiovascular disease. Measuring visceral fat allows us to identify risk early and monitor improvement over time.
Physician-Guided Precision:
For those seeking a deeper understanding of their results, physician-guided interpretation transforms objective measurements into a personalized strategy. Combined with VO₂ Max and Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) testing, DEXA becomes the foundation for individualized recommendations designed to improve body composition, metabolic health, fitness, and long-term healthspan.
